Before you even place it you need to ask yourself crucial questions. Does a view from the window help calm me down or does it distract me? How much natural lighting do I have , if any, and where does it land? Does my workspace have its own room or will it need to be part of a current room’s layout?
Unless a part of your job is hosting meetings with clientele, having a desk in the middle of the room doesn’t maximize the current space. It creates traffic flow around the desk when it’s often best to have the flow go to it instead.
If the room has a window, it’s usually best to place the desk where the shadows don’t sweep across where you have to look. It’s good no matter what to have a nearby light source that illuminates your immediate workspace as well. This is done easiest when your office has its own room.
If your workspace is sharing a space, such as a bedroom, the first thing to do is set up a barrier. It will separate the work area from the regular space. If a barrier, like a room divider, isn’t feasible, placing the desk as far away from the distractions works too.
If it’s an all in one monitor/PC just plop it down; however, if it’s separate, it’s important to know where to place the PC.
The best place to put it is where it can breathe and circulate air easiest. Having it side by side the monitor works, or having it under the desk if there isn’t enough room, or if it’s designed with a dedicated PC shelf under it . You can also place it on a dedicated side table. If you enjoy fiddling with your computer it’s best to have it on the desk itself, but if it’s a distraction to you it’s best to have it under the desk.
What’s important is how it functions for you. Keep in mind your needs, and the best spot for it, and the rest should fall into place!
